Itinerary
Huemules Visitor Center to Puesto Cagliero (2.5 hours | 6.5 km / 4 mi | elevation ⇅ - 416 m / 77 m)
Although a short day, with few views on the way up to the refugio, the payoff at the end is worth the price of admission. You'll begin hiking from the Visitor's Center on a wide road. Soon, after passing the houses of wealthy investors, you'll find the trailhead proper that will take you 400 meters up to the refugio, Laguna del Diablo and the Cagliero Glacier. Along the way, you'll have some sporadic views of the river running below. After about 5 km, you will reach a fork in the trail. The left trail takes you to the Refugio while the trail to your right gives access to the lake. The view of the glacier can only be seen from the trail on the left. The Glacier stands proudly above the crystal blue Laguna el Diablo below. Enjoy the evening and get ready for another day of hiking tomorrow.
Puesto Cagliero to Huemules via Laguna Azul (2.5 hours | 8.1 km / 5 mi | elevation ⇅ - 136 m / 475 m)
Today’s hike will take you back down the same path as yesterday to the Huemules Visitor Center, but with the opportunity to see it from a new perspective. About 4.6 km down, there will be a split in the path. Take the route to the right for some incredible views of the sparkling waters on Laguna Verde and Laguna Azul. This path adds about 1.4 km with a 50 m elevation change, but the effort is worthwhile for the stunning views. You’ll rejoin the original trail with about 1 km remaining to reach the Huemules Visitor Center at the bottom.
Eco Domes to Lago Eléctrico - Out and Back (6.4 hours | 21 km / 13 mi | elevation ⇅ - 508 m / 508 m)
The hike today will take you on a scenic out-and-back trek from the Patagonia Eco Domes. Along this route, you will have the soothing sounds of the Río Eléctrico to accompany you, setting the peaceful tone of this beautiful hike. You’ll follow the river up for 9.4 km, climbing 600 meters of elevation, where you’ll start to view the source of the river, the waters of Lago Eléctrico. Take in the views and the fresh air of this serene environment before you make your way back down.
Eco Domes to El Chaltén via Lago de los Tres (7.2 hours | 20.1 km / 12.5 mi | elevation ⇅ - 971 m / 1,015 m)
You’ll start your day where you began yesterday’s hike, heading instead to the left where the path splits. You will hike near the Río Blanco for a 4 km stretch. At 6.3 km, head west towards Lago de los Tres. Cross over the Río Blanco bridge, and continue your climb for about 1,170 meters to the lookout point for Lago de los Tres. Soak in the beautiful scenery, then retrace your steps back down towards that split in the path. This time, head south. At 15.7 km into the overall hike, take a right and catch some stunning views of the Laguna Capri and the 2,841 m tall León Peak. Continue to hike around the peak as you descend towards El Chaltén. In this city, you can treat yourself to a nice dinner—you’ve earned it! Then rest up for your next adventure.
Laguna Torre - Out and Back (5.6 hours | 17.6 km / 11 mi | elevation ⇅ - 534 m / 532 m)
You gain most of your height at the beginning of your trek. After around 2 miles, the path levels out and becomes undulating until you reach Laguna Torre. The hike from Chalten to Laguna Torre takes approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes. Here you can relax on the rocky shores and stare contemplatively at the mighty peak of Cerro Torre, which stands at 3,102 meters high. There is an optional hike to Mirador Maestri, which takes 2 hours round trip. Afterwards, descend back to El Chaltén.

Peak travel is in January and February. Expect rain almost daily, along with sun, possible snow and high wind. In fact, just expect all four seasons in one day.
