Andrew, our founder and managing director, worked for several years at a major chemical company. However, by 2013, he realized that the role didn't fulfill his personal aspirations or bring him happiness.
Seeking clarity and a new direction, Andrew decided to take a year-long sabbatical to travel, during which he embarked on a transformative Camino de Santiago journey.
“It was just an amazing experience…all of the benefits…physical benefits, [the] introspection you have on longer journeys, the connection with nature and disconnection from social media and all of the electronic stuff we are just bombarded with every single day.” said Andrew.
Following that transformative journey, Andrew began searching for companies that could arrange self-guided hiking trips for travelers. However, he quickly realized that finding a service that met his expectations was challenging. Most of the companies he encountered were shrouded in what he describes as a "black box" regarding pricing, laden with hidden fees and undisclosed costs, leaving him frustrated and without the transparent, straightforward experience he sought.
Andrew's moment of revelation arrived during an unexpected adventure in bungee jumping. Initially set on skydiving, Andrew had to change plans when inclement weather thwarted his intentions. While skydiving never fazed him, the thought of bungee jumping filled him with hesitation; the visible landing spot below was a stark reminder of what could go wrong.
It was an experience he once considered beyond his reach. Yet, upon completing the jump, a profound sense of achievement and newfound confidence surged through him. This exhilarating triumph spurred Andrew to resign from his position at the chemical company and embark on creating a travel company that epitomized the hiking experiences he cherished. This pivotal experience inspired the name "Pygmy Elephant," symbolizing how a seemingly small moment can leave a monumental imprint on one's future.
During two years of full-time travel, Andrew scoured the globe in search of the most remarkable adventures to share with others. Through his company, Pygmy Elephant, he now offers fellow adventurers the profound sense of accomplishment and connection with nature that he experienced on the Camino, inviting enthusiasts from around the world to revel in these extraordinary journeys on self-guided hiking trips.
