Embark on the adventure of a lifetime with our exclusive M-Trek itinerary for hiking Patagonia.

Andrew, Pygmy Elephant founder and creator of the M-Trek, built this itinerary to combine iconic Patagonian views with some lesser known areas.

When talking about the M-trek Andrew said, “El Chaltén is a very exciting place to visit because of Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre…but they haven't put together a multi-stage hike in the area to really emphasize those places, plus bring out some of the…lesser-known but still quite beautiful areas there” This trek is the culmination of Andrew’s years of exploration in South America, meticulously crafted to offer Pygmy Elephant clients a truly unparalleled itinerary.

Join us as we guide you through the heart of Patagonia, blending thrilling outdoor exploration with comfort and personalized service. Whether you're a seasoned hiker or a passionate nature enthusiast, our exclusive itinerary for hiking Patagonia ensures that your South American adventure is anything but ordinary.

When to Hike

If you are based in the Northern Hemisphere, quick reminder that Patagonian summer is during the Northern Hemisphere’s winter. The ideal time for hiking in Patagonia is September through March with the weeks around New Year being the busiest season. Anything outside of these months is not ideal due to Patagonia’s already unpredictable weather.

Trail Difficulty

The trails of the M-trek are well labeled, but due to uneven terrain we recommend previous hiking experience. The trekking itself can be challenging but there are a few short hikes in the beginning to give you a warmup.

Accommodation Features

Hiking Patagonia on the M-Trek takes you through multiple types of accommodations, with everything from a mountain refuge to a unique eco dome with views of Fitz Roy. This itinerary is a great mix of luxury and adventure for your stays.

Your Days Hiking Patagonia, Argentina

Day 1- Huemules Visitor Center to Puesto Cagliero

This trek begins with a short 6.5km day to get you warmed up for your trek ahead.

Setting off from the Visitor's Center, you'll begin your hike on a wide and well-maintained road. As you progress, you'll pass through an area dotted with the impressive homes of wealthy investors, a sign of the area's exclusive appeal. Soon after you will reach the true trailhead where your adventure begins!

The trail will take you through a steady climb of 400 meters, leading up to the refugio, Laguna del Diablo, and the Cagliero Glacier. Along the way you will get occasional glimpses of the river running below, and around the 5-kilometer mark, you'll encounter a fork in the trail. The left path will take you directly to the Refugio, offering a more direct route. Meanwhile the path on the right gives access to the tranquil lake, inviting you to take a scenic detour if time permits.

The truly breathtaking view of the Cagliero Glacier can be best appreciated from the left trail. With its sheer size and beauty, the glacier stands as a testament to the raw, natural splendor of Patagonia.

Day 2 - PUESTO CAGLIERO TO HUEMULES VIA LAGUNA AZUL

Today's hike, topping out at 8.1 km, retraces the steps you took on day 1 back to the Huemules Visitor Center, but this time you'll enjoy the journey from a fresh perspective. Approximately 4.6 kilometers down the path, you'll encounter a fork in the trail. Taking the route to the right offers a wonderful opportunity to see the shimmering waters of Laguna Verde and Laguna Azul.

Although this detour adds an extra 1.4 kilometers to your hike and includes a 50-meter elevation change, the effort is well justified by the breathtaking views you'll experience along the way. The vibrant colors of the lakes and the serene landscape provide a magnificent contrast to the rugged trail, creating a picture-perfect moment that is sure to be a highlight of your hike.

After enjoying the stunning scenery, you'll eventually reconnect with the original trail with about 1 kilometer left to reach the Huemules Visitor Center.

Day 3- ECO DOMES TO LAGO ELÉCTRICO - OUT AND BACK

Today's hike promises a picturesque out-and-back trek spanning 21 kilometers from the Patagonia Eco Domes, making for a full day's adventure.  As you embark on this journey, you'll be accompanied by the calming sounds of the Río Eléctrico, which set the tranquil ambiance for your trek.

Following the river's course, you'll gradually ascend over a distance of 9.4 kilometers, undertaking a climb of 600 meters in elevation. As you gain altitude, the landscape will begin to reveal the pristine source of the river, the clear waters of Lago Eléctrico. The lake, surrounded by the breathtaking Patagonian wilderness, offers a stunning reward for your efforts.

Take your time to absorb the beauty of the setting by simply enjoying the sense of peace and solitude. Once you have immersed yourself in the idyllic environment, you’ll begin your descent back along the same path.

This scenic trek, though challenging in its entirety, rewards you with some of the most picturesque vistas in the region.

Day 4- ECO DOMES TO EL CHALTÉN VIA LAGO DE LOS TRES

Today's adventure is a 20.1-kilometer trek that promises a full day filled with stunning scenery and rewarding challenges. You'll start your journey at the same spot as yesterday's hike, but this time, you'll take the path that splits off to the left. As you follow this new route, you'll travel along the Río Blanco for a 4-kilometer stretch, the gentle sounds of the river setting a serene tone for the day.

At around 6.3 kilometers, you'll turn towards the Lago de los Tres. Crossing the Río Blanco bridge, you'll continue your climb ascending approximately 1,170 meters to reach the point overlooking Lago de los Tres. Here, the beautiful scenery will make all your efforts worthwhile. Take your time to soak in the panoramic views, with the pristine waters and rugged mountains providing a perfect backdrop for memorable photographs and quiet reflection.

Once you've enjoyed the vistas and fresh air, you'll retrace your steps back down to the initial split in the path. This time, head south, taking on the next segment of your hike. At the 15.7-kilometer mark, bear right to catch some truly stunning views of Laguna Capri and the imposing León Peak, which stands tall at 2,841 meters.

Continuing your descent, you'll navigate around the peak, making your way towards the charming town of El Chaltén. As you approach the city, the prospect of a delicious dinner awaits—a well-deserved reward for your day's exertions. Treat yourself to a hearty meal and a relaxing evening, resting up in preparation for your next day of hiking in Patagonia.
